On August 30, 2022, judges at Kentucky Rural Water Association’s 43rd Annual Conference and Exhibition held at the Central Bank Center in Lexington, Kentucky, have found the state's best tasting water in Monroe County!  Monroe County Water District was named the winner of a statewide competition to identify the tastiest water in Kentucky for 2022. A panel of five judges from various sectors of the water and wastewater industry that included J.D. Chaney, Kentucky League of Cities; Ronnie Eaton, Layne – A Granite Company; Donna McNeil, Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute (UK); and Chip Wilkins, Lawton Insurance, selected Monroe County Water District’s water as the best in the state. The water district provides ground water to 3600 homes, businesses and industry.  Water districts, water associations, and municipal utilities from around Kentucky submitted samples of their water, straight from the tap, for this competition.

Nearly 800 utility professionals gained valuable insight from industry experts during the conference discussing how “Our Future is BRIGHT.”  Attendees also enjoyed networking with peers, and touring Kentucky’s largest exhibition of products and services available to public utilities.

Monroe County Water District is excited to receive the Best Tasting Water honor from Kentucky Rural Water Association.  General Manager Jimmy Simmons stated he would like to recognize the water treatment plant employees and all of the staff for their outstanding hard work and performance in providing high-quality drinking water to the community. He went on to state, “Monroe County Water District is proud to join the previous utilities that have received this distinguished award. Thank you to Kentucky Rural Water Association for their continued support through the years.”  Second place was awarded to Hardin County Water District #1, with third place going to Somerset Utilities.

Because of the quality of the drinking water from Monroe County Water District, Kentucky has a great chance of winning the national Best Tasting Water Contest in Washington, D.C., during the 2023 Rural Water Rally that will be held in February. The Rally an annual legislative event for the state affiliates of the National Rural Water Association.
