The City of Ashland is accepting applications for the position of

MECHANIC I, II, or III

Public Works Department, Fleet Maintenance/Solid Waste Division

 

Supervisor:         Mechanic Supervisor  

 

Supervises:         Mechanic of Higher Grade May Supervise Mechanic of Lower Grade(s)

 

Grade:     106, 108, 109                        Beginning Pay: $14.634-$18.444/ hour

 

Class Characteristics:   Under general supervision, performs skilled tasks in repairing and/or performing preventative maintenance on automobiles, trucks, and equipment; performs related work as required.

General Duties and Responsibilities:    Performs general repair and/or body work on all City vehicles and motorized equipment including automobiles, trucks, and specialized equipment, including gasoline and diesel-powered engines.  Determines needed repairs from operator, specialized testing equipment and road tests; makes necessary repairs; road tests to check repair work before vehicle and/or equipment is placed back into service.  Performs major and minor body and/or mechanical repairs, rebuilding and routine preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.  Makes welding repairs on equipment.  Locates and picks up parts.  Repairs hydraulic systems on dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, graders, etc.  Repairs and installs snow removal equipment.  Performs maintenance on snow removal equipment.  Tunes engines.  Changes oil, brakes, tires, etc.  Prepares and maintains accurate records on all vehicles and equipment serviced.  Maintains tools, equipment, and shop area in clean, orderly condition.  Assists with snow removal when needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience:   Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by required mechanical work experience per job classification.

 

Certification/Licensing Requirements:   Mechanic I: One (1) year of mechanical work experience, must possess or obtain three (3) of the eight (8) A.S.E. automotive certifications within two (2) years after appointed to the position as a condition of continued employment.   Mechanic II: Three (3) years of mechanical work experience, completion of five (5) of the eight (8) parts of the A.S.E. automotive certifications and must possess or obtain valid Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) within first year of appointment. Mechanic III: Five (5) years of mechanical work experience, must possess all eight (8) parts of the A.S.E. automotive certifications and must possess or obtain valid Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) within first year of appointment. Graduation from vocational school with mechanical specialization is preferred, but not required.    

 

Availability:   Must be available for callouts and emergencies; may occasionally be required to work evenings or weekends.
