(Aug 31, 2015 – Bowling Green, KY) Judges at Kentucky Rural Water Association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition held August 24-26, at the Lexington Center in Lexington, Kentucky, have once again found the state’s best tasting water in Hancock County! On August 25, 2015, Lewisport Municipal Water Works was named the winner of a statewide competition to identify the tastiest water in Kentucky for 2015. A panel of five judges from various sectors of the water and wastewater industry that included Kay Sanborn, Kentucky/Tennessee Section – American Water Works Association; Jonathan Cummings, Wascon, Inc.; Teresa Faulkner, Assured Neace Lukens; Steve Gott, S&K Equipment; and Cheryl Truman, of the Lexington Herald-Leader, selected Lewisport’s water as the best for the third consecutive year. This makes a record total of six times that Lewisport has won bragging rights in this popular contest! Lewisport, located on the banks of the Ohio River, provides ground water to 1,083 homes, businesses and industry. Sixteen water districts, water associations, and municipal utilities from around Kentucky submitted samples of their water, straight from the tap.
Nearly 800 Representatives of Kentucky’s public drinking water and wastewater utilities gathered for 36th Annual Conference and Exhibition to hear informative presentations by industry experts on why “Every Connection Counts.” Attendees also enjoyed networking with their peers, and touring Kentucky’s largest exhibition of products and services available to public utilities. The Best Tasting Water Contest is normally held in February, during the KRWA Management Conference; however, severe weather conditions across the state forced the cancellation of the Management Conference. The contest, along with most of the scheduled speakers on our Management Conference agenda was moved to KRWA’s Annual Conference.
Brent Wigginton, Lewisport City Administrator, was excited to hear the announcement of the winner. “We are so proud that we were able to win the Best Tasting Water Contest for the third year in a row and the sixth time overall. Lewisport takes a lot of pride in being able to win an award such as this. The credit must go to several people beginning with our treatment and distribution operators and their dedication to the profession. Our office staff works very hard handling the business and public relations side of our utility. We are very thankful of our Mayor and City Council for their support providing the necessary funding for continual improvements to the Lewisport Water System. Again, we are very pleased and humbled to be awarded this honor once again.” While the water from Lewisport Municipal Water Works was selected as the most appealing, second place was awarded to the Laurel County Water District #2, with third place going to the Warren County Water District.
Because of the quality of the drinking water from Lewisport Municipal Water Works, Kentucky has a great chance of winning the national Best Tasting Water Contest in Washington, D.C., during the 2016 Rural Water Rally, an annual legislative event for the state affiliates of the National Rural Water Association. The competition is part of the Quality on Tap! campaign — emphasizing the high quality, great value and exceptional taste of America’s public drinking water.
